In the spring of 1819, a young fellow by the title of Henry Shaw from Sheffield, England landed in the small French village if St. Louis, Missouri. There he set up a company promoting components to the settlers that had been heading out from the "Gateway to the West." Business was good and he was able to retire by the age of forty. Ole Henry would soon become the biggest landowner in the city. He built Tower Grove House, which grew to become his estate, and bought quite a bit of land about it.
